Beverly Man Charged With Stealing City Money

A Beverly man authorities say used his home computer to access a city bank account and steal nearly $63,000 has been held on $100,000 bail.

Ronald Ribeiro pleaded not guilty to 19 counts of felony larceny at his arraignment in Salem District Court.

Authorities say the 30-year-old Ribeiro used a home computer to take money from the city's "general warrant" account via Western Union wire transfers and to move money to his own account in December and January.

The Salem News reports that the transactions were discovered during the city finance department's monthly account reconciliation.

It was not clear how Ribeiro obtained the city's account information.

Mayor Mike Cahill says the city has recovered all but $400 of the money.

Ribeiro could not be reached.
