Chancellor: Partiers 'Brought Shame' On UMass

The chancellor of the University of Massachusetts' Amherst campus says student behavior at the pre-St. Patrick's Day "Blarney Blowout" party over the weekend "brought shame on our fine university."

Campus and town police arrested more than 70 students who attended the off-campus party that started Saturday night and ran into Sunday morning.

At least four police officers received minor injuries as some revelers threw bottles, cans and snowballs at police who dressed in riot gear to break up the party attended by thousands.

Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy said in a statement Sunday it is "unequivocally clear that the University of Massachusetts Amherst condemns the outrageous behavior of those students who acted out without any regard for public safety and the community in which they live."

The arrested students face expulsion.
