Boston's Callahan Tunnel Reopens

The Callahan Tunnel in Boston has reopened after a $19 million makeover.

The two-lane tunnel that carries traffic from downtown to Logan International Airport reopened at about 4:45 a.m. Monday, two days ahead of schedule.

The 52-year-old tunnel was closed for renovations on Dec. 27, creating traffic headaches for commuters and residents.

The renovation was planned after a corroded wall panel fell onto the roadway in December 2012. No one was hurt and no vehicles were struck.

The project included the replacement of the deck, curbing and wall panels.

A few minor fixes remain, but state Transportation Department officials that work will be done during the overnight hours in the coming weeks.
