Mass. Ed Panel Asks For More Time On Charter Bill

A legislative panel has asked for more time to craft a compromise on a bill that would allow for the expansion of charter schools in Massachusetts.

The Education Committee, which was facing a Wednesday deadline under legislative rules for voting on the bill, instead requested an extension until next Tuesday as it worked to reach an agreement.

The bill would remove limits on charter schools, public schools that operate independently of local school districts, in Boston and 28 other low-performing urban school districts.

Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz, D-Boston, the Senate chairwoman of the panel, said in a statement that advocates for charter schools have resisted her efforts to reach a compromise.

Marc Keenan, head of the Massachusetts Charter Public School Association, refuted that assertion, saying his group was willing to listen to "reasonable compromise proposals."
