Measles Confirmed In Western Massachusetts

Health officials in western Massachusetts say a confirmed case of the measles was reported last week by a Springfield hospital.

The patient was a faculty member at Smith College in Northampton and was a treated at Baystate Medical Center. The patient was admitted April 2 but has since been discharged and is no longer contagious.

Health officials narrowed the location where the person came into contact with others to two buildings on campus and identified people possibly exposed. No new cases have been reported, but health authorities remain on alert.

Symptoms resemble a cold and occur 10 days to two weeks after exposure. A skin rash follows two to four days later.

While rare in the U.S., measles can be dangerous. People who have been vaccinated are not at risk.
