State Police: 2 Dead In Mass Pike Crash

State police say two people have died in a crash on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Framingham.

Police say it appears as if an eastbound minivan spun out at about 5 a.m. Wednesday and was struck by a tractor-trailer hauling lumber.

The occupants of the minivan, a man and a woman, were pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life threatening.

No names were immediately released.

Because the wood spilled into the westbound side, lanes in both directions were closed during the investigation, causing backups of up to 18 miles in the eastbound lanes.

The cause remains under investigation, but roads were made slippery by a rain-sleet-snow mix and troopers are looking at the possibility the crash was weather-related.
