BU Student Newspaper Goes Digital-First, With Weekly Print Edition

BOSTON — Boston University’s daily independent student newspaper is transitioning to a digital-first publication with a weekly print edition.

The Daily Free Press’ Board of Directors announced the move Monday — the 44th anniversary of the paper’s launching.

Though the print edition will go weekly, “[b]eginning this fall, [the publication] will publish content throughout the day on a new, redesigned website, which will launch this summer,” Alex Nawar, the board’s chairman, said in a statement announcing the decision.

“Less preoccupied with the pressures and constraints of daily print publication, our staff will have the opportunity to expend their time and energy on breaking news, investigative reporting, in-depth features and vivid multimedia,” Nawar said.

A redesigned print edition will be distributed on Thursdays. The new print edition “will encompass the best of our staff’s work,” the board chairman said.

He added: “…this new business model will increase revenue from online sources and gives us the financial security to bring you award-winning journalism for at least another 44 years.”

BU’s student newspaper is not the first to make such a digital-first move. Two weeks ago, for instance, Columbia’s daily student paper made a similar announcement.
