BOSTON — Gov. Deval Patrick says word that Boston has been named as one of four finalists for a possible U.S. bid to host the 2024 Olympics represents a “great opportunity” for Massachusetts.
Patrick said Friday that he looked forward to the region putting together a plan for hosting the games, adding that it could help the state accomplish some of its goals for improving transportation.
A special legislative commission that explored the feasibility of an Olympic bid said in a February report that Boston had experience in hosting international events, and the region already had many venues suitable for Olympic events.
The group No Boston Olympics says the money involved in bringing the games would be better spent on improving Massachusetts schools or public transportation systems.
