3 Dems Advance To Primary Of Lieutenant Governor

Three Democratic candidates for lieutenant governor have won enough support at the state party convention to advance to the September primary.

Stephen Kerrigan, a former aide to the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, won 38 percent of the vote. Michael Lake, who heads the Leading Cities organization, won 35 percent. Kerrigan and Lake agreed to forego a runoff for the official party endorsement.

Cambridge City Councilor Leland Cheung also earned a spot in the primary with 16 percent of the delegate vote, just above the 15 percent threshold.

Former Department of Agriculture administrator James Arena-DeRosa fell short with 11 percent.

Candidates for lieutenant governor run separately from governor candidates in the primary.

The lieutenant governor's office has been vacant since former Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray stepped down last year.
