Industry Figures Show A Strong Boston Hotel Market

Industry figures show Boston's hotel market is the strongest it's been in nine years.

The average price for a downtown Boston, Back Bay or Cambridge hotel room in May was $267 — the highest since 2006.

"We’re on a good run," said Andrea Foster, vice president of PKF Consulting, a hotel industry research firm. She says that's thanks to commencements and more conventions.

"Not necessarily the convention bookings themselves, but the hotels can sell the remaining rooms that they have available at a much higher rate," she said.

And Foster says the boost in Boston hotel occupancy and room rates during May gave a lift to hotels outside of the city.

"What will happen is when Boston fills up, we tend to see hotels starting in Route 128 starting to get additional demand, because demand is being pushed out of Boston," she said.

A key industry measure of revenue jumped nearly 20 percent in May for Route 128-area hotels, compared to May of last year.
