BOSTON — Sunshine will be at a premium over the next few days, but rainfall could be sparse depending on exactly where you live.
We have a chance of popup thunderstorms Friday. These storms shouldn’t become severe, but with added moisture in the air downpours aren’t out of the question. The most likely time for these will be from about 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Overnight skies will remain partly cloudy with some patchy fog. It will be muggier than the past several nights.
The Pan-Mass Challenge bike ride takes place this weekend, with riders on the roads from Sturbridge to Wellesley to Provincetown. If you’re riding you should plan for rain. But it’s not impossible that you could make it through the race without any precipitation. The start of the race is likely dry, but heading south showers could become a factor.
Saturday we will watch an area of rain pushing up the coast from the ocean. Interestingly, this rain is associated with the front that went by the region on Monday. It’s now coming back to create a forecasting challenge for the weekend.
The best chance for rain is over Cape Cod and the Islands, as well as southeastern Massachusetts. The metro area of Boston will see scattered showers, but this isn’t a washout weekend. These summer rain areas tend to be less defined than a storm in winter, so the timing of the rain isn’t as easy to forecast. Right now the wettest period of the weekend appears to be from about noon on Saturday to 8 p.m.
Sunday will be drier overall with a risk of a showers again highest south of Boston. Northern and western New England might escape the entire weekend rain free, but there will be more clouds and temperatures only in the 70s.
Warmer and sunnier weather moves back in later next week. Monday is likely a transitional day, with better weather Tuesday and Wednesday.
