CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Following an accident at a party Sunday, fraternities and sororities at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are being told they must limit parties to less than 50 people unless they get permission from city or town officials.
Boston officials say they’ll be cracking down on college parties after a woman fell from a window at an MIT fraternity party over the weekend. The woman, who is a college student but not an MIT student, was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.
Mayor Marty Walsh says he wants to keep students safe.
“Young people are here to learn and enjoy themselves as well, but they have to be responsible adults as well,” he said.
Boston’s Inspectional Services Department has told MIT any gathering of 50 or more people in a college residence, including fraternity and sorority houses, requires a special permit form the city.
MIT says it is imposing the party-goer limit in both Cambridge and Brookline.
