UMass Amherst Suspends Informant Program After Overdose Death

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is suspending the use of students as confidential informants against drug dealers on campus, according to an email sent to the campus community Tuesday night.

The school decided to review the campus police program following a Boston Globe collaborative report with UMass students that a 20-year-old student informant died of a heroin overdose last year.

The UMass chancellor says campus police will also now report to the university's vice chancellor for student affairs to be more responsive to student needs.
