Deferred Prosecution Sought For Harvard Student

A Harvard University student accused of making a bomb threat to get out of a final exam may avoid federal prosecution.

Federal prosecutors on Friday announced that they have charged Eldo Kim in an information with emailing several bomb threats to offices associated with the university nearly 10 months ago.

Prosecutors also asked a judge to defer Kim's prosecution to allow him to abide by the terms of a pretrial diversion. The arrangement requires the 21-year-old to serve four months of home confinement, pay restitution to agencies that responded to his bomb hoax, complete 750 hours of community service and a public apology.

The government will dismiss charges in 18 months if the court agrees to defer Kim's prosecution and he successfully abides by all the terms of pretrial diversion.
