Tip O'Neill Tunnel To Close Tuesday Night

The state Transportation Department is warning motorists about an overnight shutdown of the Tip O'Neill tunnel.

Officials say the northbound lanes of Interstate 93 inside the tunnel will close at about 11 p.m. Tuesday and reopen at about 5 a.m. Wednesday so crews can do routine maintenance work that includes roadway sweeping, and wall and sign washing.

Traffic will be detoured off of the highway at exit 16, at Southampton Street onto surface streets, and allowed to re-enter I-93 north at the Haymarket onramp from Cross Street at New Sudbury Street.

Traffic headed for U.S. Route 1 will continue to City Square to access the ramp from Rutherford Avenue to the Tobin Bridge.
