Bond Set For Afghan Soldiers Who Fled Cape Cod Base For Canada

A U.S. immigration judge has set bond at $25,000 for two Afghan soldiers who took off from a military training exercise in Massachusetts last month to avoid returning to Afghanistan, where they say their lives are in danger from the Taliban.

The soldiers appeared Wednesday before the same judge who earlier set the same bond for a third soldier who traveled with them to the Canadian border in hopes of seeking asylum there.

All have been in detention outside Buffalo since being refused entry to Canada and turned over to United States authorities, who are pursuing deportation.

All are now expected to seek asylum in the United States.

Government prosecutor Marvin Muller opposed any bond, saying that while the men pose no security threat, they are likely to flee.
