Dracut Truck Driver Avoids Jail In Webster Hit-And-Run

A Dracut truck driver has avoided jail time after pleading guilty to leaving the scene after striking a pedestrian who later died.

James Long received a one-year suspended sentence on Wednesday, about 2 { years of probation, and was also ordered to pay $6,400 restitution and perform 200 hours of community service.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that the 45-year-old Long pleaded guilty in Dudley District Court to leaving the scene of an accident resulting in personal injury.

Authorities say Long struck 24-year-old Jeremy Paige in January 2013 on an Interstate 395 ramp in Webster near where Paige worked. He died on the way to the hospital.

Long, who was driving a commercial truck, said he knew he hit something but did not know it was a person.
