Forecast: Warm, Rainy Day Before Cold Weekend

After some overnight rain and even sleet pellets, the weather today will feature a mainly dry morning, with a showery rain and some thunder possible toward the evening commute.

Early this morning, the main area of rain and embedded thunderstorms is in Ohio, pushing eastward toward Pennsylvania and New York.

There will be one area of rain developing in southern New England late this morning or during the middle of the afternoon. This will then be followed by a second, heavier period of rain this evening and during the first part of the overnight.

There will likely be a lull between the two periods of rain, and there is a chance this lull could happen during part or all of the evening commute.

Colder air will filter into the region behind the second area of rain. It shouldn’t surprise you if you hear some thunder this evening as well.

As a cold front pushed off the coast, colder Canadian air returns. Temperatures will be mild late today, but return to chilly levels for Friday and especially Saturday.

Early in the weekend, an offshore storm could even bring a few rounds of snow showers along the coast. Highs won’t reach 40F on Saturday, but will turn milder and more seasonable late in the weekend and early next week.

Snow melt continues to be slow and after today will be minimal through the weekend. Next week, as temperatures warm further, we should continue to erode more of the snowpack.

Today: Cloudy and raw this morning with a period of mid-day showers that will be followed by milder air late in the afternoon. Highs reach the low to mid 50s, after 3 or 4 p.m. for many areas.

Tonight: Periods of rain and perhaps a thunderstorm. Mild, with lows in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees.

Friday: Any showers ending, not as warm. Highs 44-48 degrees.

Saturday: Lots of clouds, raw and cold with a few coastal snow showers. Highs in the 30s.

Sunday: Sunny, with temperatures between 42-46 degrees.

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high between 48-54 degrees.
