Weather Delays USS Constitution's Restoration Project

Even the planned three-year restoration project of the USS Constitution was affected by this winter's record-setting snowfall in the Boston area.

The warship was supposed to be moved to dry dock on March 20, but that was delayed until May 19 because the dock needed a new caisson door, which could not be delivered because of the weather.

The dry dock holds approximately 4.8 million gallons of water and takes approximately two hours to fill and 14 hours to empty.

The Constitution, docked at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, was built in 1797 and is the world's oldest commissioned warship still afloat. It earned its nickname in the War of 1812 and is now a featured destination on Boston's Freedom Trail, with more than 500,000 visitors a year.
