Krystle Campbell Scholarship Awarded To 2 Students

For the second year in a row the University of Massachusetts will field a team of Boston Marathon runners to raise funds for a scholarship set up in memory of Krystle Campbell. A UMass alum, Campbell was one of three people killed in the 2013 marathon bombing.

And on Monday, UMass Boston junior Mikki Hall and UMass Dartmouth junior Miriam Asangong became the first two recipients of the Krystle Campbell Scholarship.

Campbell, who worked as a restaurant manager when she was killed, did two years at UMass Boston starting in 2005, after receiving an associate of arts degree from MassBay Community College.

Both Hall and Asangong received a $5,000 scholarship that will cover half the cost of their senior year.

"This is an incredible opportunity, not only because of the legacy of Krystle, but for the fact that this is about student success, which allows for us to have this scholarship grow and grow," UMass Boston Chancellor Keith Motley said.

The scholarship fund was started by UMass Trustee Richard Campbell, a UMass Boston graduate who, like Krystle, is from Medford. The two are not related.

So far, the fund has raised $440,000 in cash and commitments, almost halfway toward its goal of a $1 million endowment.
