Forecast: Chilly With Rain And Possibly Sleet In The Evening

It’s not a great weather forecast unless you are a duck, and even then I’m not so sure your feathers will keep the chill out over the next two days. The front, which ushered in colder air Tuesday, remains to our south this morning. Little waves of low pressure will ride along this front and bring with them periods of rain.

Since the air above us is quite cold, there could be some sleet mixed in with the rain this evening through Thursday morning. I would not be surprised if there was some accumulation of sleet or graupel (hard snow pellets) north of the Massachusetts Turnpike and into southern New Hampshire.

I don’t expect much frozen precipitation, but some of the higher elevations could see up to 2 inches. In Boston, don’t be shocked if you see sleet (or hear it on the window) tonight. There might be some that sticks to the car, but I am not concerned about the roads becoming icy.

Thursday will still be very chill for this time of year, as some spots stay in the upper 30s all day. It will also be wet at times. Friday is a continuation of the unsettled pattern, but it will become milder in the afternoon.

The weekend is looking much better with highs in the mid 50s Saturday and lower 60s Sunday. This time of year sea breezes can keep the coast cooler, especially in the late afternoon.

Today: Cold and raw with some morning rain which may be mixed with sleet. Periods of rain this afternoon. Highs near 40.

Tonight: Rain and sleet. Lows 32-37.

Thursday: Morning rain and sleet, then periods rain. Highs 37-44.

Friday: Another period of rain. Milder later in the day. Highs 52-58.

Saturday: Partly sunny, highs 55-60.

Sunday: Lots of sunshine. Warmer, with highs in the lower 60s, though cooler at the coast.
