Forecast: Final Cold, Dreary Day Before Weekend Warms Up

We'll see another day of cold and wet weather before a long-awaited pattern change gets underway and brings a string of above-average temperatures that are expected to be milder than we have seen since October. For nearly six months, we haven’t seen three days in a row of 60 degrees or higher. So this weekend will likely feel particularly nice.

However, today is a very cold and damp day for early April. I don’t expect a lot of precipitation, but there will be periods of rain and sleet this morning followed by just some drizzle this afternoon. Highs won’t break 40 degrees in most places, but could get into the mid 40s over Cape Cod.

More rain moves in overnight and early Friday as the start of the milder pattern begins. This warm front will cause the rain to head into northern New England later Friday, and temperatures will begin to rise with many areas reaching the 50s.

With damp to wet roads much of today and Friday morning, commutes could be a bit slower than usual.

After the rain clears late Friday, a dry and mild weekend is on tap. I expect temperatures in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees on Saturday and an even milder Sunday. Next week, it’s likely we reach the 70-degree mark on Tuesday or Wednesday, which are both expected to be sunny. This will make for a picture perfect day at Fenway Park for the Red Sox's home opener Monday.

Today: Cold and raw with some morning rain which may be mixed with sleet. Periods of rain this afternoon. Highs near 40.

Tonight: A period of rain late at night. Lows in the 30s.

Friday: Another period of rain. Milder late in the day. Highs 52-58.

Saturday: Partly sunny, highs 55-60.

Sunday: Lots of sunshine. Warmer with highs in the lower 60s, cooler at the coast.

Monday: Sunshine and clouds. Highs in the mid 60s.
