Walsh: After Quake, Nepal Has Boston's Support

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is promising the city's full support to the Nepalese community here after Saturday's deadly earthquake.

The mayor made that promise Sunday night at a vigil on Copley Square, where hundreds of people gathered, waving Nepalese flags and holding signs reading "Pray For Nepal."

"I know that rebuilding your country doesn't bring back loved ones, but I want you to know that you don't stand alone here tonight," Walsh said.

He said the city is prepared to help as it did after the earthquake in Haiti in 2010. "You have 650,000 Bostonians behind you and praying with you."

Census figures show Massachusetts has the third-largest Nepalese population in the United States.

Family members of a Pittsfield couple on vacation in Nepal are still waiting on word from them.

Relatives tell The Boston Herald the two were on a 17-day trip to Nepal, and have not been in contact since before the earthquake.

A Somerville couple visiting Mount Everest did escape injury.
