Carlos Santiago Named Mass. Higher Ed Commissioner

The state Board of Higher Education has selected a new commissioner.

The board voted unanimously Wednesday to promote Carlos Santiago to the leadership position. He's currently the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education senior deputy commissioner for academic affairs.

“Massachusetts is a leader in education, but we are faced with an increasingly competitive global marketplace and continuing achievement gaps," Gov. Charlie Baker said in a statement after the vote. "With Carlos at the helm, I’m confident our public higher education system will rise to the challenge.”

Santiago served in top administrative positions in the University of Wisconsin and State University of New York systems before joining the the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from Cornell University.

"I am honored by the Board’s vote of confidence,” Santiago said in the statement. “I look forward to working with the Board and the administration to accelerate the pace of change and improvement on behalf of all our students and the Commonwealth as a whole.”
