John Connolly, acclaimed as an FBI star in the war against organized crime and then disgraced and convicted as a member of James "Whitey" Bulger's mob, will remain in prison.

That's the outcome of a ruling Wednesday by an appeals court in Florida, where Connolly is serving a 40 year sentence following his conviction in a 1982 murder while an FBI agent.

WBUR's David Boeri explains the ruling and the history of the case.

This segment aired on July 29, 2015.
