With Hot Temps, State Extends Pool, Beach Hours This Weekend

Several state-run pools and beaches will be open a little later this weekend in response to the steamy weather.

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, more than 50 pools, beaches and spray decks across the state will be open and guarded an extra 30 minutes, until 7:30 p.m. (See the full list here.)

Matt Sisk, with the Department of Conservation and Recreation, says it's a matter of public safety.

"There are dangerous consequences if people don't take the proper precautions during this kind of heat," Sisk said. "We're going to have several consecutive days of 90 degree whether, so this is a public safety concern. People need to stay cool."

Some parks and pools are already operating on extended schedules. The state announced extended hours for select pools and athletic complexes in Boston, Chicopee, Everett, Malden and Worcester earlier this summer.

Earlier this week Boston Mayor Marty Walsh released a list of a heat safety tips. His office will declare a "heat emergency" if temperatures reach 90 or higher for three or more consecutive days. If that happens, cooling centers across the city will open.
