Mass. Conservation Officials Buy 690 Acres To Extend Forest

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation has purchased 690 acres of land in Lakeville and Freetown to provide forest, swamp and grassland habitats for wildlife.

The two parcels of land will also be for public use. The land contains miles of trails and will become a part of the Freetown State Forest and the larger Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve, a conservation area that now contains over 15,000 acres.

The land has varied topography, from lowlands to the highest point in Lakeville, estimated at 240 feet.

DCR Commissioner Carol Sanchez said protecting the large area will enhance the ecological value and recreational opportunities for the Freetown State Forest.
