Mass. Senate President Backs Police Body Camera Grants

State Senate President Stan Rosenberg wants lawmakers to approve funding to help local police departments try body cameras.

Rosenberg told The Boston Globe Wednesday that some cities and towns are already testing the devices. He wants to create a grant program to help other departments try the cameras.

Supporters of body cameras say they help record interactions between police and members of the public and can be helpful in determining if police have exceeded their authority.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone told the Boston Herald that he supports putting the cameras on police officers in his city and hopes to have the program up and running within a year.

Curtatone said the cameras help protect residents and police.

Rosenberg said he expects public hearings on his proposal this year.
