With Heat Wave, Students In Schools Across Region Swelter For 2nd Day Of Class

It's officially a heat wave in Boston.

Temperatures climbed above 90 Wednesday for a third day in a row, marking Boston's first September heat wave since 1983, according to the National Weather Service.

Some Boston area schools let students out early Wednesday due to the heat, including Lawrence and Framingham.

Tuesday — the first day of school in Boston -- was the hottest day of the year in the city so far, with a high of 96. And many area schools worked to beat the late-summer heat by putting extra fans in place, distributing bottled water to students and even having ice pops on hand.

Most schools in Boston and some surrounding areas do not have air conditioning.

The region will get a reprieve on Thursday and Friday with some rainfall and cooler temps, according to WBUR's meteorologist David Epstein.
