A year ago today the bridge to Long Island, in Boston Harbor, was abruptly closed because it was deemed unsafe. As a result, hundreds of people in homeless shelters and substance abuse treatment programs on the island were displaced.

Since then,  Mayor Marty Walsh has launched an ambitious plan to end chronic homelessness in Boston by 2018. Sheila Dillon, the city's chief of housing, joined WBUR's All Things Considered to discuss the new initiative which she's leading.

This segment aired on October 8, 2015.
