Forecast: Cold, Cloudy Day; Rain Expected Tuesday Evening

Although there are a few flurries around spots early this morning, most folks aren’t seeing them.

However, all of us are likely feeling the cold; today will be the coldest day this week. It's cloudy out this morning, but skies will turn partly sunny later in the afternoon. The weak late November sunshine in concert with cold air from Canada will prevent temperatures from breaking 40 degrees in most areas north of the Mass Pike and barely reaching the lower 40s over Cape Cod.

Another storm system is rapidly heading east from the center of the country and like previous storms this fall, Southern New England will fall on the warm side of the storm — storms in this part of the country have a cold and warm side. In late fall, winter and early spring, if the storm passes to our right or east, we have a better chance of seeing wintry precipitation, when storms move to our west, the bulk of the precipitation will fall as rain, even in the colder months.

The morning commute Tuesday will be dry, but by the time we get to the evening one, rain will be overspreading the area. The rain won’t be very heavy, but any water on the roads always slows things down. While it won’t rain all the time Tuesday night and Wednesday, both days will be quite damp.

Temperatures warm into the 50s Wednesday afternoon and then remain mild through Thursday. The map below shows how much rain is expected through Wednesday evening.

Look for a return of sunshine the second half of the workweek with still not prolonged cold or accumulation snow in site for the next 10 days. Welcome to December.
