Local, state and federal officials are investigating the cause of an overnight fire in Lynn that killed four people and injured two others.

The three-alarm blaze swept through a three-story multi-family home at 24 Bruce Place. A police officer spotted the flames around 1 a.m.

A neighbor, Peter Muniz, described the blaze as "a ball of fire."

Authorities say the four people who died — one man and three women — were found on the second floor. Officials haven't released victims' names.

Two women — ages 18 and 60 — were found unconscious in the building; they were being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital.

More than a dozen people lived in the building.

In a third-floor apartment, Kimberlin Severino woke up when her mother grabbed her and her two brothers. They could hear fire alarms on their way out. That’s not all she heard. "All the people from the second floor, they need help," Severino said. "But we couldn’t do anything."

Luis Cedeno lived on the first floor and was alerted to the fire by one of his roommates.

"When he started screaming, 'Fire, fire, fire,' and then I opened my door all this smoke, I see all this black smoke coming to my face," Cedeno said.

The state fire marshal, Lynn fire officials and federal ATF agents were on the scene Friday and were examining the building's charred front porch.
