Forecast: Snow Showers Later Today, Bitter Cold This Weekend

It doesn’t take much snow to create travel troubles and in spite of nothing more than a coating to an inch in the forecast today, there could be some slow mid-day travel due to snow showers.

Like rain showers, snow showers are often scattered. Some areas see a quick burst of precipitation, while others never see anything at all. Like summer-time thunderstorms, we put these things in the forecast because if you do get one, it could whiten the ground (more) and even bring a quick inch.

A weather system crossing the area today is responsible for these showers. The system will lift the air high into the atmosphere, building clouds before bringing snowfall. While similar to a summer storm, there won't be any thunder with these.

Tomorrow is another day with a chance of snow showers, but again nothing significant. An arctic front crosses the area Friday, and then we have three days of very cold, pure arctic air. The weekend situation is about as cold as it gets here in southern New England in February. Temperatures on Sunday will be below 10 degrees for most of the day.

If you have pipes that freeze in extreme cold, use the next couple of days to prepare and be sure the outside water is turned off.

Amazingly, the cold air will depart later Monday, and by Tuesday we could see snow or rain showers with temperatures rising not only above freezing, but also in the lower 40s.

I don’t see any significant snow in sight at the present time, but this can change quickly.
