Micheline Maynard made her first trip to Boston at age 7 and remembers the childhood excitement of riding the MBTA with her brother, mother and father, who grew up in the Pioneer Valley.
Since then, her career has included stints in print, broadcast, digital and academia. She was Detroit bureau chief and a senior business correspondent for The New York Times, where she covered the automobile and airline industries.
She ran the public media reporting project Changing Gears, shared by Michigan Radio, WBEZ Chicago and ideastream in Cleveland, which looked at the reinvention of the industrial Midwest.
Micki is an avid food journalist and studied with Patricia Wells in Paris and at Le Cordon Bleu in Ottawa. She recently launched the Hometown Holdouts project at Forbes.com, looking at food places that stay loyal to their roots.
She has written six books, including “The End of Detroit: How The Big Three Lost their Grip On The American Car Market,” which predicted the car company bankruptcies. A rock band named itself after the book.
She was awarded journalism fellowships at Stanford University, the University of Michigan, Columbia University and from the Japan Society of New York.
She has taught at Michigan, Central Michigan and Arizona State, where she ran the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism. She is a graduate of Michigan State, which named her a distinguished alumni in 2014. But, when Michigan and MSU play each other, she officially bleeds turquoise (blue and green.)
