Hot Theater For 2014: 'Once,' 'Venus In Fur'

If you're thinking about a theater present for the holidays then a subscription to the American Repertory Theater or ArtsEmerson look like the hot tickets in town based on 2013, and "The Heart of Robin Hood" is still playing at A.R.T. through Jan. 19. But there are also a pair of plays opening in early January that could be high up on the 2014 list, based on the raves they received in New York.[sidebar]

Broadway in Boston imports the musical version of the film, "Once," which actually began life in a workshop performance at A.R.T. The musical is directed by John Tiffany, who came back to A.R.T. for the great production of "The Glass Menagerie." "Once" has a preview performance Jan. 7, opens Jan. 8 and closes Jan. 19.

Here's the original cast performing at the Tonys:

David Ives' comedy, "Venus in Fur," centering on an audition for the lead part in an erotic play, begins previews at the Huntington Theatre Company Jan. 2 and opens Jan. 8. It runs through Feb. 2.
