If you have walked anywhere near Dewey Square over the last two weeks, you've probably noticed a colorful work of art taking shape on the 70-by-76 foot air intake structure on the Greenway. It's a new mural and the latest major piece of public art to hit area.

Artist Shinique Smith, who created the mural, will paint the final touches Tuesday afternoon before Dewey Square is transformed into a block party from 5 to 7 p.m. to officially unveil the art to the public.

Here's Smith in her own words:

I see this piece, as a mural that extends beyond the wall, as it attunes to the space in which it sits. Radiating energy outward to the rest of the city and its occupants.

The mural was commissioned by the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy in partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts. The mural is based on a painting titled "Seven Moons," which is part of Smith's exhibition at the MFA.
