Visual Arts :: MFA Returns Looted Art to Italy

The Museum of Fine Arts returns stolen antiquities to Italy but some art experts are skeptical the deal will change the market for looted works.

Today, more than a dozen valuable antiquities from Boston's Museum of Fine Arts are back home in Rome. Italian authorities yesterday unveiled vases, pottery, and a sculpture apparently looted from archeological sites in Europe, smuggled overseas, and then bought by the Boston museum.

The MFA returned the items as part of a deal with Italy's Ministry of Culture. Both sides say their agreement will help squash the illegal trade in antiquities, but skeptics question whether that can ever happen.
