TJX Is Paying Its Workers In Puerto Rico, Though Stores Are Still Closed There After Maria

The Framingham-based parent company of T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods is paying its employees in Puerto Rico, even though stores there remain closed following Hurricane Maria.

Citing the "the devastating situation in Puerto Rico," Erika Tower, the director of corporate communications for TJX, said in a statement that the company believes paying its employees "is the right thing for us to do under these circumstances."

TJX has more than two dozen stores in Puerto Rico. Tower would not comment on how many of its stores remain closed.

Maria made landfall on the U.S. territory more than six weeks ago, on September 20. Nearly two-thirds of utility customers are still without power.

The Boston Globe, which first reported on TJX's decision, said that a user's October 21 Facebook post thanking TJX for continuing to pay his son has now been shared more than 41,000 times:
