180,000: Number Of Deaths Now Linked To Hospitals


For years, "90,000" was a powerful reason to stay out of the hospital. That was the annual number of deaths attributed to hospital-related errors and infections. But now — not that we needed any more reason to try to stay unhospitalized — a new federal study of Medicare patients ups the estimate of annual hospital-related deaths to 180,000.
