President Barack Obama is expected to raise $1 billion for his re-election bid, shattering all previous records. But fundraising by candidates is just the beginning. Thanks to two recent court decisions, outside groups are expected to raise more money than ever before, and in many cases it's difficult, if not impossible to track who's donating that money.

Dave Levinthal, director of the Center for Responsive Politics examines how much money was raised in past elections, what it was spent on and how much cash candidates could raise in the 2012 elections.

This segment aired on April 8, 2011.
