Illegal trade in art objects is a multi-billion dollar business, with valuable sculptures and friezes often traveling the same routes as narcotics, illegal weapons, and banned nuclear material.

Ancient Buddhist objects from Pakistan and Afghanistan are among the hottest items, and intelligence experts worry that the trade may be helping fund the Taliban. We speak with journalist Shahan Mufti who investigated the business in Pakistan and wrote about it for Harper's Magazine, where he is a contributor.
