In Iowa, Computers Replace State Job Counselors
ResumeThe state of Iowa has begun closing 36 of its 39 satellite unemployment field offices, and replacing staffers, who counseled the jobless on such things as writing resumes, with computers.
The state will save up to $7 million a year to meet anticipated cuts from Washington. State officials say regional offices will remain open and the new computer kiosks will be available in community centers and libraries. But critics worry that the jobless who aren't computer literate will be left behind.
