Counterterrorism officials are looking for three people who may be traveling to or in the U.S. to plant a car bomb on bridges or tunnels in New York City or Washington, based on a credible but unconfirmed tip that was received late Wednesday night.

In response, police are stepping up searches in both cities and towing unattended cars parked in unusual locations.
