The White House is working furiously behind the scenes to avoid a confrontation at the United Nations over a Palestinian state.

The Palestinian Authority has been gathering support for its bid to get U.N. recognition, with Turkey, a key regional player, saying yesterday that recognition of a Palestinian state "is not a choice but an obligation."

Israel and the U.S. remain firmly opposed to the move, saying that Palestinian statehood would harm the prospects of a negotiated peace settlement between the Palestinian Authority and Israel.

Guest:

  • Michael Slackman, deputy foreign editor for The New York Times

This segment aired on September 14, 2011.
