U.S. Olympic rower Natalie Dell of Everett, Pennsylvania, will be in the bow seat in the women's quadruple sculls when the games begin next week in London.

Natalie joined the U.S. Women's National Rowing Team in August of 2010, but she didn't get there after growing up, like most team members, in a world of yacht clubs and regattas.

She got there as an outsider, training in Boston, while also working at the VA Center in Bedford, Massachusetts helping veterans with PTSD.

Dell tells Here & Now's Monica Brady-Myerov that her rowing in the Olympics doesn't come up much when she's working with vets."When they're talking about what they've done for their country, out on the front lines, I am in awe of them," she said.

Guest:

  • Natalie Dell, Olympic rower

This segment aired on July 20, 2012.
