The Russian President Vladimir Putin should not be afraid of his own people - at least that's what former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev is saying.

Gorbachev also denounced recent laws passed in Russia as an "attack on the rights of citizens."

Gorbachev talked about Russia under President Vladimir Putin with the BBC's Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg.

This segment aired on March 7, 2013.
