Just in time for beach season, Elizabeth Gilbert's "The Signature of All Things" has been released in paperback.

Literary critic Steve Almond picked it as one of his recommendations for a summer read, saying the book was both beautifully written and had an amazing plot: it tells the story of a female scientist during the 19th century — something Almond says is seldom written about.

We revisit our October 2013 conversation with Elizabeth Gilbert about the book, which was her return to fiction after the monster success of her memoir "Eat, Pray, Love."

That book was not only a bestseller but was also made into a film starring Julia Roberts, and as Elizabeth Gilbert told Robin Young, that success gave her the freedom to do the detailed research she did for "The Signature of All Things."
