Boston Globe film critic Ty Burr has noticed an increase in the number of what he calls "uncertain heroes" at the movies.

As Burr tells Here & Now's Lisa Mullins, these tend to be people who are doing what they think is business as usual, but people around them and filmgoers consider heroic.

Films like "Wild," Unbroken" and "Selma" give the audiences heroes who are often beset by doubts. But in doing so, they make their heroes more relatable and their heroism more reachable for audience members.
