Indonesian officials are confirming that searchers pulled bodies and wreckage of AirAsia Flight 8501 out of the Java Sea today, only about 10 miles from the plane's last known position.

Families waiting for news at Indonesia's Surabaya airport broke down as images of the wreckage, including floating bodies, were broadcast on television.

Flight 8501 disappeared on Sunday with 162 people on board, about halfway through the flight from Surabaya to Singapore.

Shortly before, the pilot had requested a change of altitude due to bad weather, but was denied because of air traffic.
