People across the country could be drinking toxic water and not know it. A USA Today Network investigation finds that millions of Americans drink tap water supplied by small utilities that either aren’t required to test for lead and other contaminants, or are failing to meet the required testing regimes.

That means many are consuming dangerous levels of contaminants, often lead. The investigation also finds that most of these consumers live in disadvantaged or poor communities, adding to the challenge of dealing with bad water.

USA Today reporter Laura Ungar (@laura_ungar) joins Here & Now's Robin Young to discuss the investigation.

This segment aired on December 19, 2016.
